Campbeltown Backpackers Hostel

Campbeltown Backpackers Hostel
Argyll & the Isles

Campbeltown Backpackers Hostel is excellent low cost accommodation with 4 stars from Visit Scotland. The Hostel has every facility you need as a base for exploring this fascinating corner of Scotland. Discover Kintyre - Scotland's Best Kept Secret! It may be best known for Paul McCartney’s bestselling ballad "Mull of Kintyre", but the Kintyre Peninsula has much more to offer than mists rolling in from the sea.

If your heart’s desire is a wonderland of outdoor adventure, coupled with culture, arts and gastronomy, this is your holiday heaven. At its heart is Campbeltown, the perfect hub for exploring the region. A five-hour journey by bus will transport you here through some of Scotland’s most spectacular scenery.

Alternatively, the weekend Calmac Ferry, with rail and bus links to Glasgow, sails from Ardrossan on the Ayrshire Coast and is an exciting way to arrive. You don’t have to venture far to get a true taste of Kintyre. Why not visit Springbank Distillery, which makes four distinct whiskies and is the only distillery in Scotland still owned by the original family?

More adventurous visitors can walk part of the Kintyre Way. There are many route options but we recommend taking a bus from Campbeltown to Saddell and walking back – next day you can walk via Machrihanish to Dunaverty and return by bus. Architecture is another strong attraction - there are more listed buildings in Campbeltown per acre than anywhere else in Britain.

Campbeltown was once known as "Little Glasgow", when Victorian residents competed with one another to build ever bigger and bolder homes. The island of Davaar at the mouth of Campbeltown Loch, linked to the mainland by a natural shingle causeway crossed in 40 minutes, has a cave with a life-sized depiction of the crucifixion, painted in 1887 by local Archibald MacKinnon.

With so much to do and see, you’ll need a relaxing to stay –there’s nowhere better than Campbeltown Backpackers. This self-catering facility costs only £18 per person and is convenient for local restaurants and bars.
